New York legislators just passed the most substantial package of pretrial criminal justice reforms in our nation’s history.

The reforms eliminate cash bail for the vast majority of misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies and will dramatically reduce the number of people who are incarcerated in local jails statewide.

Legislators also took action to reform New York’s discovery and speedy trial practices for the better.

These reforms will reshape New York’s pretrial system to prioritize freedom and reduce the number of legally innocent people held in jail.

Now more people will remain home with their families and live in their communities where they belong while they await their day in court.

But these reforms fall short of ending cash bail entirely, and legislators acknowledge more work is still to be done.

Take Action: Call now to thank Governor Cuomo and New York state legislators for making history with pretrial reform and committing to continue the fight to end money bail for all.
