“This is a shocking, clear break from a number of President Biden’s core campaign promises regarding criminal justice reform and basic autonomy for the 700,000 residents of Washington, DC.
“The DC criminal code rewrite is an evidence-based reform and code modernization that resulted from 16 years of diligent policy development. It was based on extensive research about what works to promote public safety. Bowing to fearmongering not only hurts public safety and justice in Washington DC, but creates a political permission structure for this kind of fearmongering and rampant misinformation to continue.
“To each and every Senator who has made clear their own commitments both to DC statehood and to criminal justice reform, they should fulfill these commitments and vote against this disapproval resolution.” |
