New York Elected Leaders Must Protect Bail Reform and Invest in Proven Solutions

ALBANY, NY – FWD.us New York State Director Alana Sivin issued the following statement today on the release of Governor Hochul’s FY 2024 budget, which includes changes to vital bail reforms that have kept New York communities safer:

“While we share Governor Hochul’s commitment to advancing public safety, we must take care to follow evidenced-based solutions. Policies that would detain more people pretrial will not make us safer, and will disproportionately harm Black and Brown New Yorkers.

“An overwhelming number of data analyses have shown us time and time again that bail reform has not led to an increase in crime. In fact, re-arrest rates have remained the same for cases impacted by bail reform, and appearance rates have improved. Instead of moving backward on a policy that has saved the lives of countless New Yorkers without compromising public safety, we encourage elected leaders to advance proven solutions that address the roots of crime and keep New Yorkers safe.”
