While we have only seen the talking points of this proposal, the details indicate this will slash legal immigration levels by 50% – the biggest cuts to legal immigration in nearly a century. This would devastate our economy and specifically hurt middle class and middle income workers across the country. While this rightly acknowledges what the vast majority of Americans know – that Dreamers should have a pathway to citizenship – this bill is dead on arrival in Congress.
“As Republican Senator John Thune said earlier this week, a ‘narrower (bill) gets it done.’ President Trump eliminated DACA and created an urgent crisis. Republicans control the White House, the Senate, and the House – and unless they bring forward a bipartisan solution for Dreamers and sensible increased border security that can get 218 votes in the House and 60 in the Senate, the government under their unified control will see nearly 800,000 DACA recipients all fired from their jobs and subject to immediate deportation.
