WASHINGTON, D.C. – FWD.us President Todd Schulte issued the following statement after House Democrats filed a discharge petition on the Dream and Promise Act, a bipartisan bill that would provide a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, DACA recipients, and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders. The filing comes weeks after the Supreme Court cleared the way for the administration to terminate TPS, and with Haiti TPS set to be fully terminated and work permits canceled by the end of the month:

 “TPS holders and DACA recipients are among the most deeply rooted immigrants in this country. They've been here for decades, working in vital industries like construction, health care, agriculture, and child care. Industries that keep our country running, and make everyday life more affordable. They're raising hundreds of thousands of U.S. citizen children. They rebuilt communities after hurricanes and staffed hospitals through a pandemic. The recent  Supreme Court  decision regarding TPS, and the months of quiet attacks by the Trump Administration on Dreamers means are all at risk of being deported on a mass scale. 

“The reality is, our communities need TPS holders and DACA recipients. Our industries need them. American children need their parents. Yet, in just a matter of days, they will be at risk for deportation. Haiti TPS expires on July 24th, and hundreds of thousands of people who did everything right, who registered with the government, passed background checks, and paid their taxes, are about to lose everything unless Congress steps in.

“That's why this discharge petition matters. The Dream and Promise Act would allow Dreamers, DACA recipients, and TPS holders to access permanent protections so they can keep living, working, and contributing to our country. We thank Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia for filing this discharge petition, and for her continued leadership on this issue. Every member of the House who says they support Dreamers, who says they value the work of TPS holders, who says families shouldn't be torn apart now must make sure their actions match their words.”
