FWD.us Statement on Congress’ Failure to Pass a Legislative Solution for Dreamers This Year

WASHINGTON, DC – FWD.us President Todd Schulte issued the following statement today:

“While we are without a doubt closer than ever to passing permanent legislation protecting Dreamers, today is an incredibly difficult and disappointing day for the hundreds of thousands of Dreamers – and tens of millions of their family members, friends and co-workers. The lives of nearly 800,000 young people depend on Congress taking legislative action that would allow them to live and work in the country that is their home. There is no backup option.

“We are the closest we have ever been to passing bipartisan legislation to protect Dreamers, but January is our last chance to get this done. Congress can take a common sense step to protect Dreamers and increase border security. Over 85% of Americans and 79% of Republicans want Congress to act. We believe this can, must and will happen. January is the absolute deadline: it will take months for the Department of Homeland Security to implement a proposal from Congress. That is why leaders in both parties have made clear that January is the true deadline and must act.

“Come January 19th, 535 Members of Congress will vote for a long-term spending bill that will fund our immigration enforcement. This January 19th deadline will call a fundamental question of American values. Either protections for Dreamers will be passed into law by then, or those funds will be used to deport DACA recipients.

The time is now for Congress to stand up.
