FWD.us in the Austin American-Statesman: We need good Texas laws to address the border. SB 4 isn’t one of them

Our families, businesses, and communities deserve better than this unconstitutional and wrong-headed anti-immigrant measure.

WASHINGTON, DC – As all Texans continue to face the threat of Senate Bill 4 (SB 4) taking effect and hurting Texas families and businesses, FWD.us Regional Government Relations Director Zaira Garcia and Director of Immigration Capacity Building Susie Haslett make clear in a new op-ed for the Austin American-Statesman out today how the anti-immigrant policy is a “dangerous, unconstitutional bill that would attack Texas families, damage our economy, and hurt our entire state.”

The U.S. Supreme Court’s previous extension of a federal court’s temporary block of SB 4 expires today, meaning the law will go into effect within hours barring another decision by the nation’s highest court. This law’s enactment will be devastating for families, communities, and businesses across Texas.

As Garcia and Haslett lay out in the op-ed, “No matter how SB 4’s supporters try to spin it, its goal is simple: to frighten and hurt immigrant families by misusing law enforcement resources and the courts to target, arrest, detain, and now deport members of our communities under the guise of pursuing unauthorized migration… Even when courts ultimately reject these anti-immigrant measures, families, businesses, and communities pay the price in the meantime. While lengthy legal battles ensue, these harsh laws terrify communities, separate kids from their loving parents, and rip hardworking individuals out of our workforce… SB 4 would hurt the Texas that all of us are so proud of. Our families, businesses, and communities deserve better than this unconstitutional and wrong-headed anti-immigrant measure.”
