Mississippi has the third highest incarceration rate in the nation.
Our imprisonment rate is 57 percent higher than the national average, yet crime has fallen four times as fast in other states than in Mississippi over the last decade.
There are better ways to prevent crime than filling our jails and prisons.
HB 1352 makes marginal improvements to reentry but does not offer any solutions for safely driving down the state’s bloated incarcerated and supervision populations.
That’s why we need our representatives to amend HB 1352 to include the reforms Mississippi deserves such as bail, supervision, and sentencing reforms.
Together, we can expand opportunity and reduce our incarceration rates.
