WASHINGTON, D.C. – FWD.us President Todd Schulte issued the following statement after the Trump Administration announced it plans to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for individuals from Honduras and Nicaragua:
“The Trump Administration’s decision to end TPS for Hondurans and Nicaraguans is a serious mistake that will upend the lives of tens of thousands of deeply rooted families who have lived in the country since the 1990s.
“For more than two decades, Republican and Democratic administrations have extended these protections based on broad agreement about two things: the critical role TPS holders play in our communities and workforce, and the clear danger of returning individuals to countries still facing serious instability.
“This decision will abruptly strip legal status and work authorization from more than 70,000 people who have lived here for decades, are raising American children, and contribute every day to our economy. It is part of a broader campaign to target and preemptively revoke legal status from immigrants, leaving them vulnerable to detention, family separation, and deportation. It does nothing to strengthen our immigration system, reflects an approach Americans are increasingly rejecting, and, as our recent economic analysis shows, will also unnecessarily raise the costs for families in the U.S. We need policies that reflect the reality that immigration is good for America and for all Americans.”
