WASHINGTON, D.C. – FWD.us President Todd Schulte issued the following statement today after the passage of legislation in the House of Representatives to Protect Haitians with TPS:
“Today's final passage of H.R. 1689 in the House speaks to the incredible organizing of hundreds of thousands of TPS holders and a clear message from Congress to the President that Haitian TPS holders are workers, taxpayers, and economic contributors whose stability matters to businesses and communities across the country. Taking away status from at least 330,000 Haitian TPS holders would cost billions in economic output and disrupt industries American employers depend on.
“We commend Representative Pressley for leading the discharge petition on H.R. 1689, and the original cosponsors of the bill, Representatives Gillen and Lawler, and every Member who voted to extend TPS for Haitians. We urge the Senate to pass this bill immediately and send it to the President’s desk for his signature.
“This administration’s efforts to preemptively revoke TPS is both wrong and unlawful. In less than two weeks, the Supreme Court will hear arguments regarding the termination of TPS for Haiti and Syria — clearly unlawful actions as multiple federal judges have ruled. We urge the Administration to recognize the significance of this vote, suspend their unlawful efforts to terminate TPS, and end their attacks on our Haitian neighbors and all TPS holders.”
