Georgia “Survivor Justice Act” to Support Victims of Abuse Becomes Law

WASHINGTON, D.C. – FWD.us Executive Director Zoë Towns issued the following statement today as the Survivor Justice Act (HB 582) takes effect in Georgia which will pave the way for judges and prosecutors to reexamine and reduce harsh prison sentences for people who have been convicted of crimes related to their abuse:

“The vast majority – 75% – of Georgia voters agree it’s important to lower the jail and prison population. This law’s success is a true testament to what can be accomplished when policymakers come together in support of evidence, mercy, and justice.

“FWD.us is proud to have supported this legislation along with a broad coalition of advocates, survivors, and elected officials. We would like to thank Governor Brian Kemp, Representative Stan Gunter, and Senator Bo Hatchett for their support and leadership to get this legislation across the finish line with near unanimous support in both chambers. We will continue to support the state to ensure full and successful implementation of the law, and hope that legislatures across the country will follow suit in passing similar sentencing reforms that support survivors of abuse and reunite families.”
