WASHINGTON, D.C. — FWD.us President Todd Schulte issued the following statement after DHS announced it plans to terminate Temporary Protective Status (TPS) for Haiti. The termination will be effective on September 2, 2025.
“This is a devastating announcement that will strip legal status and work authorization from more than 430,000 Haitians who have built their lives in the U.S. Preemptively taking away the ability for people to stay and legally work in the United States, when conditions in Haiti have not improved, is simply the wrong approach. Revoking TPS will destabilize people seeking safety, families, employers, and American communities across the country and put hundreds of thousands of people in danger.
“The conditions in Haiti that led the U.S. to grant TPS to Haitians still remain—as made clear by the U.S. State Department’s website, which continues to advise Americans not to travel to Haiti, due to civil unrest, kidnapping and other serious threats. Today’s news comes on the heels of the administration’s recent termination of the “CHNV” parole process.
“Rather than these efforts to strip away protections from Haitians, leaving them unable to legally work and live their lives with some basic stability, we urge the administration to keep work authorization and deportation protections in place. This decision throws so many lives into chaos, but given the incredible economic impact of Haitian TPS holders—including those in healthcare, transportation, manufacturing and other essential industries—who contribute roughly $5.8 billion to the U.S. economy annually and pay $1.5 billion in taxes, this will come with an economic cost to all Americans.”
