DACA recipients are under renewed attacks

It’s time to stop DACA delays, denials, detentions, and deportations

It is critical that everyone knows about this, understands that we all have a role to play, and to make sure that the Trump administration is not able to weaken this program quietly.

DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) is a tremendously successful program for undocumented individuals who came to the United States as children and have built their lives here. However, escalating attacks by the Trump administration, through a combination of administrative delays and denials, increased enforcement actions, and ongoing threats of termination of the entire program, are putting DACA recipients and their families at risk.

Delayed renewals and backlogs mean DACA recipients are being forced out of status and losing their jobs through no fault of their own. Arrests and deportations of DACA recipients are also increasing.

Hundreds of DACA recipients have been detained, dozens unlawfully deported and thousands more at risk of losing their status through no fault of their own.

We are launching this campaign to sound the alarm about the ramp-up in attacks on DACA recipients and the DACA program. José Contreras Díaz is one of the most recent stories demonstrating the attacks on DACA recipients.

While the Trump administration has not taken new actions in its second term to formally end DACA —a testament to the program’s popularity—ongoing litigation will likely result in DACA recipients in Texas losing access to work authorization in the very near future. Meanwhile, the government has frozen processing of first-time DACA applications for years.

The Trump administration is making life more difficult for DACA recipients every day, systematically attacking the program and creating overwhelming uncertainty for DACA recipients, their families, and their employers. These attacks fit into a broader pattern of restricting access to work permits, weakening legal protections, and cutting off pathways for legal immigration.

The result is a system that is less stable, less predictable, and more punitive.

Delays, denials, detentions & deportations

  • Renewal delays are forcing eligible DACA recipients out of the workforce and putting them at risk of deportation, simply because the government did not process their applications in time. Even recipients who submit their paperwork on schedule are finding themselves without valid work permits.
  • DACA recipients followed the government’s process. They came forward, passed background checks, paid fees, and built their lives in the United States. Now, many are being pushed out of status through no fault of their own.
  • Meanwhile, arrests and deportations of DACA recipients are dramatically increasing, with hundreds of DACA recipients being detained and dozens already deported, despite following the rules and maintaining their DACA.

DACA strengthens our communities and economy

  • DACA has been in place for nearly 14 years and has enjoyed strong bipartisan support. The average DACA recipient came to the U.S. at the age of six, has lived in the U.S. for more than a quarter century, and nearly all have had DACA for over a decade.
  • DACA recipients are deeply embedded in communities and industries across the country, helping power our economy. Employers have invested years in training these workers and unexpected work authorization lapses create unnecessary disruptions.
  • DACA recipients contribute hundreds of billions of dollars to the U.S. economy every year. Removing them from the workforce weakens businesses, strains local economies, and undermines growth at a time when stability is essential.
  • Arresting and deporting DACA recipients sends a dangerous message: even people who comply with the system are not safe. That undermines trust in government and creates fear across entire communities.

What needs to happen next

  • The ongoing attacks on DACA are unacceptable. President Trump should ensure that DACA renewals are processed timely, stop targeting DACA recipients for detention and deportation, and withdraw efforts to end the program.
  • Republicans and Democrats in Congress must pass a narrowly tailored legislative solution that provides permanent protections for Dreamers.
  • Congress and the administration have a clear path forward: protecting Dreamers and ensuring timely renewals would stabilize the workforce and support families.

Real families are paying the price

The consequences of these policies are immediate. Families are being separated. Employers are losing trained workers. Communities are absorbing the economic and human cost. Children, including U.S. citizens, are experiencing trauma and instability as their parents are detained, deported, or pushed out of the workforce because of processing failures.
