Arizona is facing an imprisonment crisis. But #AtWhatCost to our communities?
Arizona has the 4th highest imprisonment rate in the United States. Since 2000, the state population has grown by 33 percent while the prison population has grown by 60 percent — nearly twice as fast.
This imprisonment rate is driven by policy decisions to send people convicted of less and less serious offenses to prison for longer and longer periods of time. But #AtWhatCost? Our prison population costs taxpayers $1.1 billion every year, and rips communities and families apart.
