Texas Immigration Advocacy Leaders Denounce Tuition Equity Lawsuit, Program Termination & Call for Action

Coalition of Organizations Note the Benefits of In-State Tuition for All Texans for More Than Two Decades

AUSTIN, TX – In response to the lawsuit filed against the State of Texas by the U.S. Department of Justice regarding in-state tuition for undocumented students and the state’s subsequent decision to terminate the program, Texas immigration advocacy leaders issued the following statement:

“The Lone Star State has provided in-state tuition rates for all Texans, including undocumented students, for nearly a quarter century. This law has contributed to the best and brightest being able to attend school in Texas and contribute here. In fact, we are a model for other states who want to see their economy, workforce, and communities succeed, with 24 states enacting similar policies and following our lead after the Texas Dream Act first went into effect in 2001. Not to mention, Texas stands to lose $461 million annually without the Texas Dream Act.”

“There have been many failed attempts to limit or repeal this law, including this session. This lawsuit and state action to then terminate this decades-old law have circumvented the Texas State Legislature, due process, and the desire of many Texans. We encourage our elected leaders to reconsider these actions and safeguard in-state tuition rates for all Texans.”

The statement was jointly issued by the following organizations: American Immigration Council, Every Texan, FWD.us, Texans for Economic Growth, and the Texas Immigration Law Council.
